Safari & back home in Amsterdam

Here I am back in Amsterdam. Last Friday we came back from an amazing experience in Uganda. I am still getting used to this awful cold weather. And being back to the Dutch life with all these obligations is not something I would call fun. But of course it is also good to be back and see everyone here.

The last week in Uganda definitely was a great week! First we went to bed & breakfast Villa Katwe in Masaka that is owned by a Dutch-Ugandan couple, Robin and Wycliffe (also our guide). They are such a nice couple! We could finally really relax! We went for a great dinner, had a pool day and enjoyed nice conversations with all the guests staying there.

Sunday morning it was finally time to go on safari, we were all so excited. Our guide Wycliffe (from Your Way Tours) picked us with the safari van and the drive to Queen Elizabeth Park started. The drive was around 6 hours, but time flew by. It was amazing to see more of the country and its beauty. At some point we passed tea plantations, it look beautiful and you could just smell the tea.

When we arrived at the park the guide already spotted 2 elephants in the distance. We needed some time to find them as well, but we were so happy. Then he told us we would see them from less than 10 metres away. I think we all did a little scream of excitement.
The first two nights we were staying at the Bush Lodge, where we slept in safari tents. It was next to the river. Before dinner we did our first game drive and saw the sun set over the beautiful landscape.

We had a really nice dinner (4 courses!) by the campfire. We could hear the hippos and elephants, they sounded so close. The guide told us that during the night the hippos would come out the river and cross the grounds to get food. I am not sure how much I liked that idea. But when we walked back to our tent, an employee of the lodge walked with us and showed us that there were 2 hippos. We were within 25 metres of them.

The next days were filled with seeing so many animals! We saw a lot of elephants, like multiple big groups with 10 to 20 elephants. We saw 2 lions, 2 hyenas, hippos, buffalo’s, antelopes, birds, crocodiles, monkeys, and hogs. We travelled to Ishasha to see the tree-climbing lions. We did everything we could, went for 3 game drives there but sadly didn’t see them. But it didn’t really matter, because we were already so happy with the trip. I can’t describe how amazing it was to see all those animals in wildlife. The landscape was beautiful. The guide was great, he showed and learned us so much. It was a great way to finish our time in Uganda!

I have learned so much about midwifery and becoming a midwife! I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to experience midwifery in Uganda. I am for sure this experience will make me a better midwife. Last but not least, I have to thank Eline and Lisanne for being great travel buddies! I don’t think the trip would have been this good without them.

Thank you all for reading my blogs and sending me messages, the support was really nice while being away. For now it is time to finish my studies and become a midwife!

Lots of love from Amsterdam

    Jeannette Bennebroek:

    Dag Irene,
